Craig has been talking more in his sleep lately. For anybody else, this might raise the alarms. But, Craig has always talked in his sleep; it's actually a relief to hear him babbling again. Jill does it too, by the way. She can have whole conversations and not even remember it. Erin, not so much. I got whacked in the head the other night by her and she did remember it. Hard, I might add. Would that be called sleep-whacking? Anyway, I digress..... This morning I was out in the family room having a moment with the view when I heard him mumbling from his room. I waited to see if it would fade off like he was dreaming or if he actually needed something. The mumbling got louder so I went in to check on him. He was obviously in between sleep and being awake but was trying to communicate something that I couldn't understand and that was very important to him. After several tries, I gave him a sponge to moisten his mouth, waiting on pins and needles to hear what this news was. Did he have a vision? Did he see Mom? Are aliens real? Does he know who killed Tupac? Speak Craig, speak!
"I dreamt I was working with Dog the Bounty Hunter" wah, wah, waaaaaahhhhh.
"Oh. What were you doing?"
"Picking up petty thieves." Wow. That's deep man, deep.
I thought I might also take a moment to mention some things about the hallucinations he's having. As hospice explains, these are a normal part of the transition process and are rooted in neurological changes as well as overall physical changes. When Craig talks about them, he usually just says that, "his eyes are playing tricks on him." When he was describing what he saw, he didn't seem terrified or horribly scared, just kind of had the "that's weird, man" sentiment. He mentioned it was like seeing shapes in the clouds. I think it's interesting that he referred to some of what he's seeing as sprites, given our heritage. What it means, if anything, I don't know. But, the sprites or cloud images are not inherently negative unless they affect him that way.
