In all the years before, it was so easy to find the right words. Now, the I Love Yous and the tender exchanges seem in hindsight to be almost too casual. When life is uncomplicated, it’s easy to take for granted all the little moments, to continue on with things without really feeling, and, of course, to assume there are plenty days ahead.
As I sit here typing, I can see you moving your feet to help with circulation. You’re sitting in your mechanical chair, wearing your blue “sharpest tack in the box” nightgown, and lifting your legs one at a time to build muscle strength. And as you speak with Craig, I can see you holding back the tears to remain strong for your son.
For the first time in years, I feel like I’m finally living. With all that has become of us, it’s brought us closer and has added texture to an already strong bond. My love for you and for the family now has deeper meaning. For 28 years, you’ve put your heart on the line. You’ve given more than we’ve ever had the time or awareness to acknowledge. You’ve listened, comforted, shared, and sacrificed, and without fail, you’d always be at the ready to answer our 3a.m. calls.
Yesterday, you asked if I’m getting tired of this (referring to helping you in and out of the wheelchair), and I said absolutely not; I’m right where I need to be. After all, I’ve learned from the best: you’ve never tired of being there for us, I’ll never tire of being there for you.
So to you on your day, Happy Mama’s Day! We’ll see ya around this time next year!
Love you with all my heart!
J
Happy Mother's day to Mary! I hope it was a great day. We wanted to pass along a funny story from our dinner on Saturday. We were all out eating and Carter was at the end of the table sitting in his high chair. We were sitting adjacent to the bathrooms. Well, a senior lady came out and was using a walker. Carter, out of the corner of his eye, notices this and snaps his head 180% to watch her. He looked VERY interested in her walker. He followed her for a good 15 feet.....never taking his eyes of her. We all watched this and were laughing out loud. Ever since borrowing Mary's he has been on the look out for his next opportunity. It was very funny.
