The simplicity of life

When did life become a boxing match? Good grief. I think we're entering the 12th round with this travel dilemma. Can't SOMETHING run smoothly or go according to plan, ANY half-baked plan?Where's the love, life?

As Jill reported, it would appear that there are no available wheelchair accessible RVs in the state of Oklahoma or its neighboring states. Jill and Diane have also looked into handicap accessible full-size conversion vans (or anything "HCA") and the fella who actually has such a thing won't let it out of the state. You're right, once it leaves Oklahoma boundaries it's an entirely different woooorld out there with vastly different laws, traffic rules, places you can hide a big-ass RV. Better to keep it in Oklahoma where one can keep a close eye on it. Must be a lucrative business for them, too, what with the oodles of folks wanting to take an extended road trip entirely within the state of Oklahoma. I can envision a trip starting in the middle, spiraling out to the pan handle and such, and then promptly turning around--mustn't engage the invisble electric collars that would surely zap as one nears Kansas, Texas and the like.

Back to square one. This is getting a bit ridiculous. In a world such as ours, how can it be that there aren't more wheelchair accessible vehicles to rent?!? Does the world of rental cars believe that folks who can't walk, can't travel? I suppose “accessible” or “universal” design concepts stop at the OXO can opener.

So, we're still brainstorming, needless to say, but it shows the depths of our desperation to get the family in one state, if not to simply mock the rental agencies and airlines of America by having (cue whisper voice) a wheelchair bound traveler. EEEEEEK. (It’s infuriating. I think I’ll write my Senator). ;0)

Hey, if we're missing something, please advise! If you know of a place that rents wheelchair accessible vehicles, even if it's a motorcycle with a side car, we'll take it! ~E

  2. I am sure you have looked into this, but there is a place in OKC that rents accessible vans. If you haven't talked to them yet, here is the website I found and phone number: www.wheelchairgetaways.com. 800-642-2042. I know it's not an RV, but it might work. M.

  3. All: wheelchair getaways has a franchise in Denver so one way rental may be an option. I am happy to board any dogs at my house or provide housing, shuttle service, meals, etc. I'm not too far from University Hospital and have a very flexible schedule. Let me know what I can do to help. Cellphone: 303-882-0904. Kim Tyson
